a stillness, disturbed (2018)

Premiered June 17, 2018 by the Ryan Mantell and the North Jersey Youth Saxophone Ensemble in Randolph, New Jersey
(saxophone ensemble: 2 sopranos, 4 altos, 2 tenors, 2 baritones, bass)
Duration: 10’

Program Note:

a stillness, disturbed is an intense 10 minute work for saxophone that begins with a drone that evolves and grows more intense over time until the entire work collapses in on itself. It was inspired by my experience with anxiety attacks.  It is accompanied by the following poem:

a night so serene
the reflection of the stars
and the stars are the same

lost in the
mirror

an image
of
an image
of
an image
of
an image

until
a tiny ripple
reveals

a stillness, disturbed

our darkness becomes tangible
and I am lost once more
